Ames’s method in this book is not an analysis of the Catechism itself. Rather, he chooses a particular text of Scripture that supports the main thoughts for a given Lord’s Day. While the exposition is directly from the Bible, Ames’s doctrinal conclusions interact with the corresponding Questions and Answers of the Heidelberg Catechism. "The Catechism of the Catholic Church is a landmark in Catholic publishing. Within a year after it first appeared, over three million copies were in circulation in nine languages. Pope John Paul II has described the catechism as "a sure and authentic source book for the teaching of Catholic doctrine.".
A few characteristics of the Heidelberg Catechism include: 1) a simplistic but profound summary of Scriptural doctrinal teaching, 2) a tool to be used for training youth and adults alike, 3) the provision of a unified theology, 4) training and instruction for the church. Like any catechism, it follows a question-and-answer format emphasizing. Nor could the book well be otherwise if true to itself. A faithful exposition of the Apostles creed, the Decalogue and Lord s Prayer, which enter so largely into the Heidelberg Catechism, cannot fail to be of general interest to all those who love and pray for the prosperity and coming of Christ s kingdom.
As I pondered the pastoral implications of preaching through such a heavily doctrinal passage as Rom it seemed good to me that perhaps every few weeks we should pause in the flow of the exposition, and step back, and talk about some of the practical implications of what we've been seeing.
